Supporting educators with innovative approaches to media literacy and digital skills

On July 17 and 18 of 2024, in Lisbon, Portugal, the MILES initiative hosted an International Workshop at Universidade Lusófona. This event, organised by Aproximar with logistical support from OLAE, gathered experts from all partner organisations (21 specialists in total) to design and structure the training programme, aimed at strengthening digital literacy and critical thinking within the European educational context.

The international workshop was preceded by intense conjoint work. Interviews and questionnaires were carried out with policy makers, stakeholders, teachers and students. A desk review on the subject was also carried out by all the Miles project partners. This work supported the mapping carried out by all the partners in their countries, becoming the basis for planning the structure of the course.

The International Workshop involved several collaborative activities, including:

  • Defining the course structure;
  • Setting learning objectives and outcomes;
  • Assigning development responsibilities;
  • Planning pedagogical content;

These collaborative activities resulted in a preliminary structure for the course, which includes five main modules, covering essential topics such as:

  • Introduction to disinformation and media literacy.
  • Media environment and challenges.
  • Mechanisms of disinformation.
  • Enhancing media and information literacy.
  • Community and policy initiatives.

These modules aim to equip teachers and educators to combat the impact of disinformation and promote critical thinking among students. With this structure in place, the next step is to develop digital content and practical activities for training, which will be available on the project’s online platform.

By the end of 2024, partners expect to work on creating digital materials to be used in training educators and teachers. This content will include “pre-bunking” exercises, data analysis, and critical thinking techniques, with the goal of creating a lasting impact on European education in terms of digital literacy and combating disinformation.

If you are interested in promoting critical thinking and wish to participate in this transformation, this is the ideal opportunity for you.

Get in touch with the organisation in your country, and together we can empower our students to navigate the world of information more effectively, shaping a more informed and critical future in education!
